Hydraulic Filters
If you own construction machinery that functions via hydraulics, it can be important to ensure that you have hydraulic filters fitted to not only improve the chances of top performance, but also the long-term function of the machine. As heavy machinery can be extremely expensive to replace, making sure that the ones you own and operate last as long as possible can be a huge consideration.
The importance of hydraulic filters
The majority of long-term failures within hydraulic systems are related to deterioration as a direct result of unwanted contaminants and small particles wearing away constituent parts of the machinery - and these tend to come from unclean oil. With a hydraulic filter, solid, liquid, and gas-based particles will be removed and safely deposited away from the areas where they can cause the most damage.
How hydraulic filters function
Hydraulic filters come in two types: spin-on hydraulic filters and cartridge hydraulic filters - and these can come with filter head accessories. There are typically five main points where they can be installed for maximum benefit:
- The suction line
- The pressure line
- The return line
- The cooling and filtration circuit
- The vent caps
The main features to look for in a hydraulic filter are durability and filtering capacity to ensure it can meet the needs of the vehicle/machine in question.
In most cases, when a hydraulic filter is in use, hydraulic oil should be changed yearly or after 2,000 filter press operating hours have been clocked. It can be important to do due diligence, as heavy use in highly polluted areas or heavy downtime can change this. Be sure to perform regular maintenance checks, as a clogged hydraulic filter will decrease function and you may experience pressure drops or even fluid bypass that may cause new contaminants to enter the hydraulic system.
