Our humble beginnings
In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, our story unfolded on the outskirts of Youngstown, Ohio. The idea sparked in the mind of BRW's founder, Tom Mikes when he noticed that nobody sold truck parts online. At the time, online stores, especially for niche items such as truck parts, were a rarity, there was little to no information on how to start or run an online store like that.
Tom decided it was a risk worth taking. With minimal knowledge of online sales, a single MacBook, and a small team comprised of family and friends, we ventured into the uncharted territory of online truck parts sales.
LEARNING BY DOING
The first few years were far from glamorous. We ran Big Rig World from a MacBook in the family dining room. It started with just one person handling ordering and shipping out our items, learning about the truck parts industry by leaning on highly experienced old hands in our sister company, Youngstown Kenworth. Initially, we operated with a low profile, flying under the radar, and yet, the innovations we implemented, and the ability to fulfill a large variety of parts orders quickly, inadvertently created an illusion of a much larger corporation.
The early days were a mix of grit, determination, and the art of learning as we went along. We started with minimal experience but were fueled by the conviction that there was a space for affordable, quality truck parts online.
INTERNATIONAL VENTURES AND CHALLENGES
The first major step on our ladder of success came not from domestic orders, but rather from international ones. While still figuring out domestic logistics, we were shipping to countries like Saudi Arabia and Russia.
The challenges were real – from shipping companies in their early stages not knowing how to deliver oversized items to navigating complex international shipping processes. The early days were marked by uncertainty, hard work, and navigating the delicate balance between learning and growing. Nobody knew how to do those things back then, we had to figure out everything on our own.
BUILDING THE TEAM
In 2012, we took a significant step by hiring our first salesman. By 2014, the momentum was building as we gained popularity, leading us to establish our own office space. However, the turning point came in 2018 when our website faced a critical breakdown.
In a search for a solution, we entered into a long-lasting partnership with Ivision, a digital agency that has become the crucial element of our development and online marketing operations up to this day. This pivotal year marked not only the resolution of our website crisis but also a period of expansion as we strategically built our team. We were ready for takeoff.
FULFILLMENT CENTER EVOLUTION
As of 2020, our burgeoning operations had outgrown the confines of our shared office space. We needed more space to operate, so we decided to expand and invest in a cutting-edge fulfillment center. This evolution extended beyond merely expanding our square footage; it was a strategic initiative to reclaim control over the entire customer journey.
This investment allowed us to offer an impressive array of over 1.7 million products, covering an expansive 80,000 square feet. The immediate advantages for our customers were palpable – faster shipments, enhanced visibility into our extensive inventory, and an elevated standard of customer service.
