Air Filters

Air filters for trucks and heavy vehicles are designed to clean the air of impurities like dust and other contaminants that would otherwise be taken in by engines during use. If these particles are allowed to infiltrate combustion systems, trucks will experience a decrease in function, including reduced power and torque, lower fuel consumption, and more.

These types of contaminants are abrasive and will damage the constituent parts of an engine over time, so it will be important to not only have the right air filtration for your truck’s needs, but also perform regular maintenance to ensure longevity and the level of performance you’d expect from your engine.

There are three types of air filters:

Paper filters

These are the most common types of filter found in standard vehicles, and can be a worthwhile solution for areas with little air pollution. These aren’t reusable and will need regular replacement and are not likely to meet the needs of most trucks and heavy vehicles.

Gauze filters

Gauze filters are more popular for use in trucks and heavy vehicles, as they have a higher level of durability and can last longer with proper cleaning and maintenance. They will degenerate over time, but can perform well when filtering air within larger engines with more intensive needs.

Foam filters

Foam filters are the strongest, most durable option on the market and these will need less maintenance than their counterparts. These aren’t often used in trucks, or in many larger vehicles in fact - but some filters may contain a foam element to provide an extra barrier between dirt and debris and the combustion system.

Features to look for in an engine air filter

  • A flame-resistant filter medium
  • Durable and airtight filter seals
  • Well-designed filter materials
  • Strong, durable, stabilised design
