Core Charge

What is a Core Charge ?

Different types of commercial parts can be remanufactured and then resold.Typically, these parts are steel intensive components for engines ordrivetrains that hold value. These parts have a core price that is used asa form of deposit on the part that can be remanufactured and that isdesigned to encourage return of the old part. The "core," is your old part.Returning the core will save you money, as you are compensated for theportion of the old part that still holds value.

Parts that may have a core price include brake shoes, brake mastercylinders, water pumps, starters, alternators, injectors, rebuild kits, andair conditioning compressors.

Core Charges and Core Prices Examples

The sale of a remanufactured part involves the price of the part itself, aswell as an additional core charge to encourage the return of the old partfor remanufacturing purposes. The core charge is a form of deposit you payuntil returning your old part. If you don't have the core at the time ofpurchase, you must pay the core charge. That charge is refunded to you whenyou return the core.

Let's say you buy a remanufactured injector with a $15 core charge, but youhaven't removed the old injector yet. You must pay the core charge when youbuy the part. After you replace the injector, you return the old one to thestore with your receipt (which includes the core charge). As long as theold part is in acceptable condition, we will then refund the $15.
