Fuel Filters

A fuel filter is an important component of the fuel system in trucks and heavy vehicles, as it protects the engine from harmful substances like dust, rust, and similar debris that may otherwise enter the system and cause significant wear and tear that can lead to long-term damage.

There are two types of fuel filters to consider when it’s time to make a replacement; metal spin-on filters and ECO cartridge filters.

Metal spin-on filters

Metal fuel filters are typically found in diesel fuel injection systems and act as an essential cleaning tool to remove dirt, debris, and water from fuel. These usually feature a filter head and a detachable filter cartridge that comes in a metal casing.

ECO cartridge filters

ECO cartridge filters function in much the same way as their counterparts, albeit without the metal casing and additional parts. They are fitted in prefabricated housing and feature a high-performance filtration media for high-quality protection and longer filter life.

The dangers of unfiltered fuel

When fuel isn’t properly filtered, it is likely to be full of contaminants that will affect the overall performance of your truck. Debris like rust, paint chips, and dust can act abrasively and wear down the insides of your fuel pump, injectors, and other similar components.

While an old fuel filter can cause the issues that will lead to poor performance, so too can the wrong installation. In these instances you may experience:

  • Inconsistent or uneven engine performance
  • Decreased power for your truck or heavy vehicle
  • Unnecessary fuel system malfunctions and failures
  • A higher turnover for replacement in fuel system parts

To maximise performance, the fuel filter should be checked, maintained, and potentially even replaced at regular intervals to ensure the longevity and continued function of your truck.
