High-quality alternators for heavy-duty vehicles

An alternator is an electromechanical device, found in most vehicles with an internal combustion engine, including trucks and semis. Its primary function is to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy in the form of an alternating current (AC). This electrical energy is then used to power various electrical systems, including headlights, radio, and many others.

The alternator works by using the engine’s rotational energy, which is transferred with a belt connected to the engine’s crankshaft pulley. Inside the alternator, there are coils of wire and a rotating magnet (rotor) that create a magnetic field. As the rotor spins within the coils, it induces an alternating current in the wire coils. This AC current is then converted to direct current (DC) through a rectifier, which consists of diodes, before it is used to charge the battery and power the vehicle’s electrical systems.

Alternator maintenance in trucks and semis

Proper maintenance of your alternator can extend your truck’s lifespan and prevent unexpected breakdowns. The drive belt is responsible for transferring the engine’s rotation to the alternator and should be inspected frequently. Check for any signs of wear, such as fraying or glazing, and if the belt is worn, replace it as soon as possible.

A healthy battery also reduces stress on the alternator. Check the battery terminals for corrosion and clean them if necessary. Make sure the battery is fully charged and replace it if it’s nearing the end of its life.

Make sure to carefully inspect the alternator’s connections. The connections should be  clean, tight, and free of corrosion. Loose and corroded connections can cause poor performance and shorten the alternator’s life.
